It will now be easier to detect potentially life-threatening conditions early on, particularly for babies where the warning signs are more likely to be missed.
This follows our 2023 report on diagnosing conditions in newborns, which continues to have impact to this day. 🧵3/4
Pulse oximetry is a simple but potentially life-saving test, using light to measure the level of oxygen in the blood.
Universal screening will make a huge difference to Black and Brown babies by reducing the reliance on unreliable visual assessments. 🧵2/4
Following the efforts of the Observatory and our Maternal and Neonatal Health Advisory Group, national guidance has now been updated to mandate that every baby receives a pulse oximetry screening between 2 and 24 hours of age. 🧵1/4
