Very lucky to have had a few things written about what I’m up to. But I think this is my favourite. And on this wet Autumn night it’s a reminder Spring will return. Thank Charlie Holland of @Londnr magazine. Charlie really got it. That lad is going places. londnr.com/the-waiting-game-…

Regular moves with the chunky bunch. Turning land that grew organic veg into hopefully stunning biodiverse pasture. Need to feed worms. In two years of this guarantee you will see why sheep are called ‘golden hooves’.

Pasture, Dartmoor, grazed on a ‘move often on rotation’ system* (Not a hay field) Wildlife and food production in the same place at the same time. Work in progress, but we are getting there. (* as everything is a abbreviation now I’m calling it MOoR grazing! )

Just look at this truly awful scene of utter carnage from Dartmoor.

I’m going to have to over winter a lot of sheep this year. Work starts now to get the soil holding water. Our herbal ley has exploded so bringing in a friends heavy mob. So exciting. Absolute ecosystem engineers.

there are incredibly more animals destroyed, squished, or poisoned, in the production of crops than meat -it's just we do not see / will not accept, these smaller critters are also alert animals with lives of their own
This is false and anyone who believes this needs to go back to study ecology and/or physics (particularly related to the 2nd law of thermodynamics).

Been a perfect storm to produce frankly world class meat. Got masham very fat in the autumn. During the 7 weeks of continual rain they absorbed outer into the muscle (my theory) then totally new fat this Spring. Sheep got an extra 8 months of life. Restaurants doing ok as well!

The beauty of a coppice woodland-little visit to the hazel coppice and a block I cut last year. A sheer joy to work in these woodlands and carry on these ancient practices which produce beautiful habitats and sights like these.

📃 In farming, the rule is, you don’t win them all but you try your f**king best everytime. 📄 Not sure what the outcome for this little lass will be, don’t really know what’s up with her if we are totally honest. Born this morning, just not getting going. We will try our hardest as ever, this is just the reality of livestock. It could be the best calf you’ve ever bred, but that’s only if they live.

First time I’ve managed herbal ley from new. This field has very shallow soil. Lots didn’t take initially so have grazed it three times since autumn. A total of 18 days with 350 sheep. It’s not rocket science, it’s just moving sheep. But it’s seems like a miracle. Very proud.

Very proud of this. My old sheep got fat in the Autumn. Lost a fair bit during the seven weeks of continual rain but have fattened up on Spring grass. Possibly the best meet I have produced. I might be right. instagram.com/reel/DWeT2y_MZ…

When I had woods first time round I wish I had monitored change in bird types from the beginning. The incredible Merlin app has been created since then. 2nd time round let’s see how things change with putting sheep in there. Not a bad start though.
