The cricket has been gripping in the first Test between England and New Zealand and there has been much to admire in the bowling.
But even though England supporters will be delighted that their side should win the first game of their post-Ashes reset โ New Zealand need another 218 runs with seven wickets left and the pitch is getting no easier โ the state of the most scrutinised 22 yards of turf in the world remains a major headache for the wider game.
And, while that remains the case, it will become harder and harder for cricket to justify holding so many of its most important games at Lord's โ such a wonderful venue with such an imperfect stage.
