Many areas in SW Ontario could use a soaker. Photo: currently in my long-term tillage-rotation-N trial. Measuring tape goes down 50 cm in the wheat. Cc: @wheatpete

To whom it may concern: stop applying Jena experiment results to crop production. -Farmers use managed, intelligent species selection; mixtures must beat the best monocultures, not the average of all monocultures as ecology measures it. -Biodiversity benefits in ecological research take 3โ€“5 years to emerge in perennial systems; this tells us nothing about annual crops or cover crops. -Ecological research finds that biodiversity correlates with benefits, not what causes them, and without knowing the mechanism, farmers have no basis for action.

No one likes DON. The mycotoxin, that is. Hot off the press: the 2025 corn hybrid screening trial report. corn.gocrops.ca/ Use as one tool to manage the risk of DON mycotoxin in corn. Seed company volunteer entries. A collaborative effort that no one has ever seen. ๐Ÿ˜€ Download a pdf-or NEW this year-- sortable spreadsheets. Soybean photosynthesizes efficiently through to maturity even with 30โ€“40% defoliation before flowering: no yield loss. Leaves lost early are rapidly replaced by early R-stages. Canopy compensation in soybean can be enormous (Board & Harville, Agron J., 1996; Kropff et al., 2017). #CropPhysiology #AgronomyAha Photo: Pioneer Seeds

Which is brighter: a cloudy day in the summer at solar noon or bright classroom? ANSWER: on a cloudy day at summer noon, 100โ€“300 W/m2 vs 3-7 W/m2 in a well-lit classroom. #CropPhysiology #AgronomyAhas

December 5 is World Soil Day. It marks a significant milestone for Ridgetown Campus. Our long-term tillage-rotation-N trial celebrates 30 years this year (1995โ€“2025): three decades of continuous data have helped us understand various soil functions, crop rotation benefits, nutrient cycling, and long-term sustainability in Ontario cropping systems. We are grateful to everyone, past and present, who contributed to maintaining this research. #WorldSoilDay #SaveSoil

Touring my massive long-term cover crop trial @RidgetownCampus this morning. The plots with 50 lbs N/ac at cover crop seeding after wheat have been producing approx 2x more biomass than no N applied over the years. This year no different. Photo shows oat cc (N applied in the background, no N in the foreground. Similar results at the Elora sister site managed by @aacorrendo. Cc @WheatPete

Poor residue spread behind the combine with tremendous affect on wheat growth and development. Was a relatively new combine but that doesn't factor. Guessing 40 bpa lost yield potential in high residue strips. What you say @wheatpete?

FACT: The farmers who contact me most often make the most money. They arenโ€™t wealthy because of what I am telling them. They have done well because they are constant learners and humble enough to get advice and feedback from others. AKA they are investing in themselves.

A weird request. I'm looking for corn seedlings of any vegetative stage that I could dig up for my students to stage next week. Maybe around an elevator? Between London and Ridgetown. Thx. Photo for attention. :)

Kudos to my research technician extraordinaire Ken VanRaay for engineering this unit to place fertilizer efficiently in tilled strips using a Pluribus strip tiller for research. This also opens the door for more experiments. Proposals or research contracts welcome. @RidgetownCampus @DawnEquipment @GrainFarmers @OMAFAinnovates @plantagguelph @uofg @WheatPete @AlbertTenuta

We're looking to hire lab assistants for two courses this fall. Graduate students or even some enthusiastic former Ridgetown agriculture students would be considered. See the graphic below for lab times at Ridgetown for each course. Two assistants per course can share responsibilities. Additionally, there will be some marking and lab preparation time. The course professors have designed all lab assignments. If you're interested, please email me dhooker@uoguelph.ca. Serious inquiries only. cc: @IsabelleAickle1 @MiladEskandari_
