In 1898, shortly after the death of her husband Jack, Isabella Stewart Gardner acquired Giovanni Bellini’s Christ Carrying the Cross. As if to transform the work into a memorial, she placed her favorite flowers, violets, in a silver cup she and Jack purchased in Norway in 1867.

one of the most beautiful Rothkos I have ever seen.
Today I saw the Rothko exhibition in Paris and I am not ashamed to say that there were moments when I cried and others where I felt in the presence of a god that I do not believe in. It was beautiful.
