And the bankruptcy tally just keeps rising. For context: There were no bankruptcies for 40 years in the regulated era & not nearly as many mergers. That type of stability--for cities & communities, passengers, workers, and even markets--has been absent for nearly half a century.

In 2023, @WilliamJMcGee and I published an article called “Reregulate,” citing *200* airline bankruptcies within the first decade of Airline Deregulation.
This industry has been in crisis for a half century, and the takeaway from deregulation is that it only has itself to blame.

2/8 Post-1980s the US airline industry shrunk to unprecedented levels, thanks to dozens & dozens of mergers & bankruptcies. We're down from 70 to just 11 scheduled passenger airlines soon, with the Big 4 oligopoly--AA, DL, UA, Southwest--controlling 80%.

Now Sean Duffy is the first to speak IN FAVOR of it.

4/9 Dozens & dozens of airline mergers have shrunk the domestic industry but we're all living in Groundhog Day. Broken promises to Congress, DOJ, & DOT aren't investigated, let alone punished. Despite harms to consumers, labor, & communities, we just segue to the next merger.

At Consumer Reports we filed a FOIA for DOT complaints on this a decade ago. Not once but TWICE Congress (both Houses/parties) told DOT to stop airlines from charging such fees. Yet the bullshit continues & Duffy tells flyers to dress up. Talk about enshittification. Disgraceful.
