hi. i’m an engineer who has spent some time optimizing webpages to collect more $$ happy to offer a lil pro-bono consulting to any abortion funds that want help improving online donations or understanding donation behavior, if that’s useful

i’ve found rapid tests pretty confusing, so here’s my anecdotal experience if useful: day 0: exposed at a wedding (welp) day 3: developed sore throat, 2 negative rapid tests day 4: sore throat, negative rapid test, pending pcr day 5: sore throat, positive rapid test

one learning: i previously figured that once you have symptoms, rapid tests would be able to pick up signal…but nope, turns out that’s not the case false negatives are quite tricky; it’s surprising that tests come w lotsa info on procedure, little info on interpreting results

(i’ve heard similar things from many ppl; if you happen to be the type to believe that you need to have work obligations to stay sane / that rest is boring, it’s worth questioning imo)

camping is great b/c: - nature is majestic - so much overlap between camping gear & emergency kit supplies, disaster prep becomes nbd ready.gov/kit

i think i finally get why this website bums me out more now: everything requires context. you used to be able to curate a feed of unrelated thoughts/jokes/ideas/pieces but now it feels like most tweets are a response or take on some invisible topic "everyone" is talking about

from a product lens...news articles are a truly bonkers format for transmitting info 🤷‍♀️

i’ve always felt icky about Effective Altruism even tho i’m sympathetic to some of its core elements (like accountability, data savvy) and that ickiness comes from how the act of measurement, despite seeming impartial, can shape what you value:

some things are easy to measure / quantify, e.g. health outcomes other things are hard to measure, e.g. the impact of art and culture and effective altruism as a framework will always undervalue the things that are hard to measure, the things that lack good data sources

tl;dr if you have extra money to give, allocate more of it to art and cultural production 🤗
