Workers of Maldives face violations, intimidation, and harassment in workplaces every day. The current administration appears to treat workers as disposable rather than as humans with rights and dignity. When votes are needed, employment is offered; when political priorities change, workers are made redundant, leaving them and their families to suffer.
Today, we once again witness actions being taken against workers for exercising their constitutional rights and expressing their political views. Workers are being denied the space to exercise their freedom of association, while trade unions and workers’ representatives are being prevented from representing workers at international forums.
I strongly condemn these unjust, discriminatory, and unlawful actions against workers and their unions. The government must immediately reverse these practices, respect workers’ fundamental rights, and uphold its obligations to protect freedom of association, collective representation, and democratic participation for all workers in the Maldives.

Government’s failure to support social partners’ participation at the 114th International Labour Conference is unacceptable.
