CRESCENT UNIVERSITY DON UNVEILS MASHET AS NEW EDUCATION FRAMEWORK By Kehinde Ademuyiwa A don at Crescent University, Abeokuta, Dr Kola Adesina has challenged the current global education outlook with a new learning framework that adds Humanities to the widely adopted STEM and STEAM model, naming it MASHET. Adesina, a communication veteran and currently Head, Department of Mass Communication at the Ogun State-based institution, said the existing STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) and its later variant STEAM (which added Arts) have both ignored Humanities, a critical pillar for human development. His new framework, MASHET, stands for Mathematics, Arts, Science, Humanities, Engineering, and Technology. In a background to the framework, on his LinkedIn page, made available to our reporter, the Crescent University don explained that the missing 'H' is not a mere add-on but a fundamental shift on how formal education should be structured. "STEM and STEAM have produced excellent technical minds over 20 years, but they have largely ignored social engineering leading to inadequate thinking in many instances," Adesina told our reporter in an interview. "A graduate who can write code but cannot ask 'why' or 'what is just' is not truly educated. The Humanities is expected to teach context, ethics, real-time narratives and other courses, no machine can replace." Adesina, a veteran journalist turned communication scholar, said he developed MASHET after two decades of study following his postgraduate certificate in education at Canterbury Christ Church University in the United Kingdom. According to him, the study included observing many African students excel in technical subjects but struggle with critical analysis, ethical reasoning, and clear communication. He noted that global conversations around education reform have increasingly questioned STEM's dominance. In 2023, UNESCO called for greater integration of social and human sciences into science education. Adesina said MASHET is a practical answer to that. He added that ‘some educators and policymakers across Africa are already calling for more details on how to integrate and teach it in schools and universities. "We are not throwing away STEM. We are completing it," he said. "The 'H' is not an afterthought. It should be the centre." According to Adesina, MASHET-aligned lessons would see engineering students study narrative ethics, technology students debate historical consequences of innovation, and science students practice persuasive writing alongside laboratory reports. Students should be able to ask further probing questions such as: What are the prospects and challenges of a new technology, and how does a new innovation affect society? etc. Early reactions among African educators have been mixed. Some applaud the framework as long overdue. Others worry that adding another letter dilutes focus on technical skills that drive employment. ‘In Europe today and some other parts of the world, there is a widespread recognition of inadequacy of the focus on STEAM to the detriment of the societal values of humanity, ethics, contextual thinking, and other social engineering courses; leading to growing calls for more integration of Humanities into the technical curricula,” he said. Adesina further explained that his goal is not fame but a simple shift in how general education curriculum is planned based on the context and needs of cultures and countries globally. "I am a journalism lecturer. I teach people to ask questions. That is all I am doing, asking one big question: what did STEM and STEAM forget? The answer is 'H' (Humanities). And MASHET has put it back." Kehinde Ademuyiwa is a scholar, currently a Doctoral Researcher at North West University, South Africa. Crescent University... Crescent Student Association opens week with Lecture Idris Katib | Abeokuta Dateline |13 June 2026 In celebration of its 2026 Da'wah Week, the Islamic Mission for African Students' Association (IMASA), Crescent University, Abeokuta has marked its Grand Opening with a public lecture tagged "The Unwavering Compass". The event which took place in the Bola Ajibola Auditorium of the institution had the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Prof. Rasaki Kareem and other members of the management in attendance. In his lecture, the guest lecturer, Dr AbduHakeem AbdulLateef demystified the theme as a core to discover the essence of living, obedience to the Almighty Creator, Allah and being charitable to fellow humans and animals. AbdulLateef identified that a Muslim should use their wealth in four ways: to seek the favour of the Almighty Creator, for self gratification, to benefit others and not to use same to cause grief to others. Identifying the two conditions to knowing the creator, the multi talented Islamic scholar unveiled that the owner of anything is never silent about his ownership and whoever knows nothing about creation or ownership of something says nothing about it. He said ever since the owner of the heaven, the earth, the oceans, the mountains and humans had claimed their creation, no one else had made a similar claim. AbdulLateef reasoned that thousands of creatures came to life without forebears, citing the first dog, the first cat, the first lion, first monkey and many others, stressing that the Almighty Creator has the power to create without a father or mother or both. He further told the audience that their Creator would test them of three things: whatever He endowed them with, whatever He denied them of and whatever He withdraws from them after they have been endowed. Other members of the institution present are Chief Imam Usman Qasim, Imam Taofeek Busari, Dean of College of Information and Communication Technology, (CICOT), Dr Maruf Oyelakin, Dean of Student Affairs, Dr Mikhail Akindoyin, Deputy Registrar (Establishment) Alh. Hakim Dawodu and Deputy Registrar (Senate and Admissions) Mr Hakim Ogunsola Crescent University... Breeding Upright Achievers #cuabng #imasaweek #crescentunivetsityabeokuta

Why Crescent University Law is Top-notch The Bola Ajibola College of Law (BACOLAW), Crescent University, Abeokuta is arguably in the top ten faculties of law in Nigeria given its sterling national and international records over the years. Both the undergraduates and alumni of the prestigious College have always demonstrated the academic and ethical excellence the university stands for. Only recently, the BACOLAW quota for the Nigerian Law School was increased to 120 after a critical review from an accreditation visit by the Council of Legal Education (CLE). The visitation team led by the Director-General of the Nigerian Law School, Dr Olugbemisola Titilayo Odusote commended all facilities met on ground while also making recommendations for further growth. In addition to this, BACOLAW has a full accreditation status with the National Universities Commission (NUC). Remarkably, graduates of BACOLAW have made First Class grades from the Nigerian Law School. This achievement likened to the Olympics where star athletes from different countries meet to determine superstars among them. So, Crescent University has produced super lawyers in this context and this is a pointer to the quality of academic and professional training the institution provides. BACOLAW has also distinguished itself with sterling performances in prestigious national essay competitions in law and allied areas. In 2024, a Crescent University law student, Mujeebat Idris, emerged winner of the Parliamentary System Support Group (PSSG) National Essay Competition ahead of finalists from University of Calabar and University of Ilorin. This feat was replicated by another landmark victory in the Alao Adavise National Essay Competition on Privacy and Data Protection in 2025, which is a further testament to the institution's capacity and capability in contemporary legal scholarship. Beyond the quality control, top quality academics and essay contest feats, Crescent University BACOLAW also recorded top performance at the prestigious 31st Vis-Moot Court Arbitration Competition in Paris, France 2025, one of the world's most revered platforms for legal advocacy and arbitration. This achievement reinforces the proficiency of Crescent University law students to stand shoulder to shoulder with their counterparts from top-tier universities around the world. The College further reinforced its reputation through an outstanding showing at the 2025 International Bar Association (IBA) Moot Court Competition at The Hague, Netherlands. Participation and success in such high-profile events provide students with priceless practical experience, sharpen their advocacy skills, and expose them to international best practices in legal profession. In addition to its academic and competitive successes, BACOLAW has produced hundreds of chartered arbitrators by the Nigerian Institute of Chartered Arbitrators (NICARB).Year in, year out, many BACOLAW students benefit from professional training in alternative dispute resolution by NICArb becoming certified before graduation. For students seeking world-class legal education grounded in excellence, integrity, and global relevance, Crescent University, Abeokuta, offers the perfect platform to launch a successful legal career. Why Crescent University Mass Communication Leads By Idris Katib Every parent or prospective student has a reason for choosing a course of study and institution offering the programme. One of such reasons is performance of products, after graduation, in postgraduate studies, employment and entrepreneurship. Crescent University Mass Comm satisfies these three variables. The slogan "our first class is world class" came about when an alumna, Dr Rafiat Gawat Raji, a first class product of Crescent Mass Comm went to Robert Gordon University, Aberdeen, Scotland, to replicate the feat at her Master's programme.Soon after that, other alumni from other departments of Crescent University followed suit in their further studies in Europe, American and Asian universities. This is a topic for another day. It is gratifying that numerous Crescent University Mass Comm products have since occupied top positions in the industry. The current national Public Relations Officer of the Nigerian Customs Service, Aliyu Maiwada, Head of Corporate Communications of Keystone Bank, Rasheed Bolarinwa, Owners of Platform Times, Platform Africa, NewsHub, The Business Package and several others are all products of Crescent University Mass Communication. This department has also proudly produced two distinguished editorial staffers for the British Broadcasting Corporation(BBC). Adedeji Ajayi and Abayomi Adisa were Deployments Editor and Senior Journalists, making their Alma Matter, Crescent University proud. Unlike many Departments of Mass Communication in Nigeria which lay more emphasis on media theories and even set their examination questions as objectives, Crescent University Mass Communication majorly bases its training on practical, hands on tutoring of students. This is evident as lecturers blend their teaching with industry experience. It also reflects in the manner with which examination questions are set-an industry related approach. Remarkably, Crescent University Department of Mass Communication recorded arguably one of the highest National Universities Commission's accreditation scores three consecutive times, scoring 90% in 2012, 93.5% in 2018 and 92% in 2023. No department of mass communication in any Nigerian university, arguably, has this hat trick of 90% score by the regulatory body. It is also on record that Crescent University Mass Comm. trains students in specialist journalism in which over a dozen of specialized newspapers and magazines are produced every session by students for their practical training in news writing, news editing, headline casting, proofreading, opinion writing, advert copy writing, editorial writing, caption writing and page planning. The students' training print production includes: Image Frontier, Newsmakers, OnStage, Airwaves, FoodSecurity, Health Matters, Agro Insight and many more. These are in addition to teaching and mentoring in Digital Broadcasting, Digital Public Relations plus Advertising, Artificial Intelligence and Film and Cinematography.
