NKG2D is an activated receptor expressed on the surface of NK cells and CD8 T cells, playing a critical role in innate immunity by recognizing virus-infected and tumor cells. Animals regulate food intake through internal setpoints, but how these setpoints are encoded remains unclear. A new study in Drosophila reveals that protein intake setpoints vary by sex and mating status and are stored within protein hunger neurons as resting membrane potential. Two opposing GPCR signaling pathways adjust this setpoint: FMRFa-FMRFaR-PKC lowers protein intake, while MS-MSR2-PKA increases it.
