I had to laugh at the slight of calling RPGs "currently popular" in this article from 1981 about Gladiator (which was a very fun wargame from Avalon Hill).

I have been having fun with 5.5 D&D with just a few tweaks. No weapon masteries. Close exploits with house rules when needed. Ramp up encounter difficulty (encounter guidance is good, but not followed well in recent adventures). If using 5.0E monsters, ramp up damage.

When I found D&D in 1979, wargames were huge. I found it on a shelf at an army surplus/hunting/hobby store. It looked like this, except everything else on the shelf was wargames not versions of D&D.
