In the commentary I argue that "Artificial Intelligence" should not be regulated. Not because AI systems can't be dangerous or because I think AI systems should not be regulated, but because AI is ill-defined and a useless regulatory category.

For an upcoming special issue of the ACM journal "Digital Government: Research and Practice", I wrote an (for me) unusual article: a commentary, i.e. a much more opinionated text than a usual scientific article.

While I agree that ACL is not an AI conference, I think itās not a fruitful endeavour to re-brand AI, a (flawed) term that we have been using for decades, suddenly as AGI or literal intelligence. Itās not what it means. ML is a subfield of AI. #ACL2024NLP
