Esta palabra fue acuñada en 1964 por los geólogos australianos Isabel ‘Joy’ Bear y R. G. Thomas en un artículo en Nature.
Viene de 'petros' (piedra) e 'ikhôr' (líquido que fluía por las venas de los dioses en la mitología griega).
