What a game we saw today at Leederville Oval!
Early on it looked like the Thunder were going to make light work of the Royal, Peel with the first 5 scoring shots and the first 10 minutes almost entirely in Peel's forward 50. But the Royal clawed back the 16 point to under a goal before a Corey Tregenza shot after the siren made it 10 points Peel's way.
Just three scores (all goals) in the second, including captain Jack Sears 2nd to help give Peel a slender 4 point lead at the main break.
The second half was a sea-sawring affair and at times Peel looked to have done enough in a low scoring game, like when Sears kicked his 3rd in the 10 minute of the third to open up a 15 point lead. But East Perth never gave up and had plenty of chances and livewire forward Sebit Kuek threatened, but didn't capitalise after Oscar McDonald give him too much space to break free.
An early Kuek goal to start the forth cut the margin to 2 points, captain Sears had two opportunities to extend the margin but only managed minor scores. It wasn't until Corey Tregenza converted in the 11th minute was it a two goal game. The Royals had the last three scoring shots of the game but Peel held on to win by 6 points 9.8 to 8.8, Peel now 3-3 and back in the five going into the State Game bye.
My picks today were;
5️⃣ O'Driscoll ⚓ (22 disp, 8 marks, 1.0) Felt like Nathan was everywhere today and used his pace to advantage in moving the ball through the midfield.
4️⃣ Davies ⚓ (19 disp, 9 marks) Continues his good season with a equal game high 9 marks. Managed some good intercept marks and kept Sebit Kuek in check when he was his opponent. Will be dirty he dropped a mark in D50 (running towards the goal) in the third and was pinged for a deliberate rushed behind from the resulting kick of the spilt ball.
3️⃣ Riddle ⚓ (12 disp, 32 hitouts) Lost the hitout count 35-32 to the taller and more experienced Scott Jones but showed mobility with his leap at the ruck contest. Rucked the majority of the game, with Draper as his backup, without Crossor or Burmeister in the side. Aidan is developing nicely after injury cut his 2025 short.
2️⃣ Simpson ⚓ (23 disp, 5 marks, 4 tackles) Like O'Driscoll, Cooper had plenty of ball between the arcs, helping mop the ball up and half back and driving the ball forward with his pace.
1️⃣ Sears ⚡ (12 disp, 5 marks, 3.3) provided a target up forward from early on and with Charlie Nicholls relatively quite today. Will rue missing a number of getable shots at goal that would have almost sealed the game early in the last.
I also thought Brandon Walker was good in defence in the first half, helping stem the flow of the ball into East Perth's forward 50, but The West reports he has concussion again.
Jeremy Sharp lead all players with 36 touches, but I thought that O'Driscoll and Simpson had more impact on the game.
