I teach high school English in a low-income rural community. Help me show students that language arts can be interesting and fun! #clearthelist #teacherwishlist #clearthelist24 #education #teaching amazon.com/hz/wishlist/ls/1H…

Ah yes, because having access to something means everyone uses it at the same time? Do these people not close stall doors or something? Why are they so WEIRD?

I had a lesson on that last bit yesterday. Quite often student are afraid that giving the "wrong answer" will result in "looking stupid" in front of their peers. #EdChat
A holistic approach to discipline isn't just about a program like: Restorative Justice, PBIS or Discipline with Dignity. Effective disciple is about class culture: respecting each other, Teachers respecting students, student having the confidence to ask questions. #EdChat

I had a quiet chat with a student today after one class. We had an assessment. Despite repeated reminders / redirection, they just ... didn't do it. Why? "I was distracted." #EdChat

I'm grateful that they weren't disruptive today (as sometimes happens), and they weren't outright defiant. But they didn't use the time provided to demonstrate their writing skills. #EdChat

I'm in the middle of one of my favorite start-of-term activities: Five Day Feedback. It's a LOT of work, but IME it's well worth it. I always look forward to finding out what students share with me, and to getting to know each of them as individuals. youtu.be/QoQPbIIuwm0

As an ELA teacher, I find value in including regional authors and poets and tying more standard literature to the local culture. So in that case, the flexibility of local control is helpful. #EdChat

Unlike most countries, the US defers decisions about educational curriculum, content, and values to state and local school boards. What are the benefits and drawbacks of state and local control? How does this affect student learning? #EdChat

If parents, administrators, and other community members also want to help students find success, why do they make it difficult for teachers to do that? #EdChat

What are some of the weaknesses in that curriculum? What do you do to address them? #EdChat
Full disclosure: I am not a fan of our designated curriculum at all. So we work around it by incorporating relevant elements in order to keep them learning the language structures and grow their proficiency. #edchat
