Very frustrated with NSF GRFP. A 2nd year grad now ineligible after postponing last year. Her pre-grad app was rejected without review for mentioning crop impacts. I'm a previous recipient and served as a reviewer. The fellowship needs serious reform, not half-baked changes.

New leaked document shows HHS wants to merge NIAAA, NIDA, and NIMH into a new "National Institute on Behavioral Health." No budget has been proposed yet, but with a potential 40% cut to NIH and no dedicated addiction institute or director, addiction research is at serious risk of being sidelined. Addiction causes ~2,000 deaths per day in the US and has been in the top 5 concerns of Americans for the past 20 years. HHS/NIH must do better! We need a fully funded National Institute of Addiction Science. Nothing is final. Congress has the power to change this. Call your representative. Speak up now, before decades of progress disappear.

There’s an enormous amount of disinformation flying around about NIH right now, so let’s clear a few things up. The NIH is not Big Pharma. It doesn’t make drugs, it doesn’t set public health agendas, and it doesn’t profit from your illness.

Funding from the @NIH contributed to the development of 354 out of 356 (99.4%) of the new drugs approved by the FDA between 2010 and 2019, and 🚨 100% 🚨 of FDA approved drugs btw 2010-2016. @NIH funding is the backbone of American biomedical innovation. #protecttheNIH

Why is the NIH an incredible engine for scientific progress and U.S. biomedical leadership? $1 NIH spends--> $2.5 economic activity. Check out this fact sheet for more info: actfornih.org/wp-content/upl… 🧵 1/4

@MSpring_VT’s nifty new paper out in @SfNJournals shows that serotonin sizzles to reward! It encodes value - objective and subjective in the DMS. It also increases in anticipation of a reward and to a cue that predicts a reward. doi.org/10.1523/jneurosci.06…

None of this would’ve been possible without her!! Such an amazing mentor, even better friend. Incredibly grateful and proud of all of our work throughout the years. Here is to many more figures and video scoring together🧔
one of my most cherished & brilliant students, @danielagarrod02 is graduating today! I am so lucky to have spent 3 years doing science with her. she’ll be starting her PhD in the Brown-NIH program in the fall, and she’s 100% going to be a superstar in the coming years 🌟🧠

heading to SfN? check out my latest work with @DrKyleSmith this Sat at 1 (board JJ8). we explore the microstructure of sign-tracking dynamics during cue contingency changes, favoring detailed analyses of behavior over simple automatic readouts of lever pressing. see ya there!

I'm so excited to share my very first project, now available to view as a preprint on biorxiv! We find that NAc ACh activity mediates flexibility of sign-tracking response structures during a contingency change. biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/…

Current literature suggests that PAG might be overstimulated in PTSD patients exhibiting defensive responses. The lecture by Tiago Branco on Neurobiology of Escaping addresses how evolutionary role of the PAG and its relationship to escape behavior, especially escape threshold

The interaction between the Superior Colliculus and the PAG studied in rodents in Branco’s lab might potentially be a model for understanding threat-detection and defense mechanisms in humans with PTSD, and even more generally the Innate Alarm system. #DartmouthAtSfN #SfN22
