"ChatGPT is my friend."
A kid wrote that in an anonymous survey this week.
Our children quietly got a new confidant. One we've never met, and they're not telling us what it says.
We rehearse the birds-and-bees talk for years, but the new 'AI talk' seems to be skipped.
So I finally had it this week.

1/ Last month Snapchat launched "AI Sponsored Snaps": ads you can have a conversation with, right in the chat feed.
Snap's pitch: "Conversation is becoming the most valuable real estate in advertising."
3/ Same trick shows up in 3 places:
- the feed (keeps them scrolling)
- the wallet (times prices the offer to the kid)
- the relationship (AI "friends" baked into normal apps)
Different surfaces, same move.
4/ I'm not banning the apps. I'm teaching one sentence:
"If something in an app is being really nice to get you to buy or stay longer β that's the AI doing its job, not a friend."

#AI
On August 2, the EU AI Act starts working in your kid's school.
That's 10 weeks from now.
3 in 4 Dutch parents don't know how their child's school currently uses AI today, let alone what changes in August. π§΅
7/ Five questions worth asking your kid's school before summer break:
1. Which AI systems are you using, now and from August?
2. How do you fulfil the transparency obligation?
3. Are any decisions about my child made by AI?
4. Protocol for deepfake incidents?
5. Where do I object?
8/8 The school question is now urgent. It has a date attached.
The home question stays where it always was. It stays yours.
Mine, too.
