Gig alert at @MITelectionlab. We have an opening for a Research Support Associate position in the lab, which is ideal for someone just graduating who wants to see what research at a place like MIT is like. Pass it around. careers.peopleclick.com/care…

I was Derek's discussant at APSA for his JMP on "amateurs." His work is thoughtful, provocative, and creative.
With #APSA2024 done, excited to announce I'm on the job market this cycle! I work at the intersection of U.S. political behavior and institutions, with specific interests in representation, partisanship, and democratic functioning across national, state, and local gov 🧵1/n

As Democrats deliberate over whether Biden should step aside, a consideration likely on the mind of House & Senate Democrats up for reelection is whether a weak presidential candidate at the top of the ticket hurts down-ballot candidates.
As @daveweigel has brought up, there’s a decent case the expectation that Trump was going to lose big in 2016 boosted R candidates for voters looking for a check.

1) In the paper, we find little evidence consistent with differential partisan turnout based on the quality/ideo. of the Senate/governor candidates. However, it's easy to imagine that presidential campaigns are more effective at mobilizing partisans (e.g., Enos and Fowler 2018).

2) Anticipatory balancing could play a more prominent role in an election in which both presidential candidates are very unpopular but one candidate is presumed to be a clear frontrunner.

It's one thing to win title after title at a club that has every advantage, that spends more on wages than any other club by a huge margin, but for Pep to do this at a club like Man City, that's special. Less than two decades ago they were at risk of relegation. Amazing.

People may think of a small group (say, a dozen) of friends / family members who had Covid but none of whom developed long Covid. They would intuitively infer that the true rate of long Covid is very unlikely to be one in three.

If the true rate of long Covid were in fact one in three, the probability of drawing a (random) sample of size n=12 in which 0 people had long Covid is <1%.

Amplifying implausible claims about long Covid (i.e., one-third of infections result in long Covid) may make people generally skeptical about its severity and prevalence. In other words, I suspect wildly inaccurate claims actually undermine support for long Covid patients.

Of the 103 million confirmed cases of Covid-19 in the U.S., an estimated one-third have led to #LongCovid. But a new study suggests that even more people may be suffering from long Covid without ever receiving an official diagnosis of Covid-19. trib.al/2Gw4Ipw

This is great news for Chris, for Harris, for the University of Chicago, and for the study of cities!
Congratulations to Harris Prof. Chris Berry on being appointed faculty director of the Mansueto Institute for Urban Innovation. The institute provides leadership and new forms of evidence to support people-centric, sustainable urban development.

A few reactions to the Berhalter-Reyna report (that I will likely delete in not too long): 1) The Reyna parents are obviously petulant and repulsive. We knew this before the report, and the details released in the report certainly provide corroboration.

10) The investigators also do not seem to consider how witnesses' legal risk may reasonably influence cooperation. The statute of limitations had long expired on the domestic assault that Berhalter admitted to; there was essentially zero legal risk for him.

11) On the other hand, the investigation was examining whether Reyna had recently committed extortion. It is unsurprising that his attorney would advise against sitting for an interview in what very well may have been an adversarial setting.
