While it's natural to think momentum favors Boston in tonight's #BOSvsMIA match, a behavioral phenomenon with a larger volume of statistical evidence in sports points the other direction. That's loss aversion...
In baseball, Toby Moskowitz and @jon_wertheim found that in 3-2 counts in baseball that started either 3-0 or 0-2, whichever player had the "momentum" actually saw adverse outcomes on the 3-2 pitch, again all else being equal.
Obviously home court and other factors may be working against Miami, but they are playing to avoid "blowing" the series, which is an advantage over Boston's goal of "stealing" the series.
Join us! We're hiring for data science, product, operations, and engineering roles across various sports (🏒🏈⚾️⚽️🏀🏏🎾⛳️). Work remotely with our talented team at Zelus and help shape the future of sports analytics. Learn more on our careers page zelusanalytics.com

The Brooklyn Nets Training Center is an awe-inspiring place to work. From the courts, you can see Lower Manhattan.
It was so important to me to host @WinSportsData here because I wanted women to see themselves in sports, in this place. Because they were invited to be here.
