Two dangerous warnings from 1 Samuel 8 regarding the nature of government and rulers: Warning 1: Most people willingly give up freedom for convenience. The prophet Samuel warned the nation what a king would do to them: "He will take..." (v 11) "He will take..." (v 13) "He will take..." (v 14) "He will take..." (v 15) "He will take..." (v 16) "He will take..." (v 17) Rulers don't give, they take. - your sons to war - your daughters to industry - the fruit of your sweat and labour They will tax you (and in our modern day, rob you via inflation) until you are a slave in your land. As a result, "you will cry out because of your king, whom you have chosen for yourselves, but the Lord will not answer you in that day." (v 18) So how do we respond?
