Chinese automakers are eyeing Canada as a place to assemble "knock-down kits" under the EV mandate.
The vehicles are built almost entirely in China, shipped here in pieces, and put together by a small Canadian workforce before being sold to consumers.
Canada's auto parts industry warns that a plant producing 150,000 vehicles can support thousands of jobs and generate billions in economic activity. A knock-down kit operation employs only a fraction of those workers while most of the value, parts, and supply chain remain in China.
Canadians were promised the EV transition would create jobs here at home. Instead, we're opening the door for Chinese manufacturers to capture more of our market while Canada's auto sector continues to shrink.
