I've been learning way too much about fonts (more accurately type faces) and I have a new appreciation for them.

For example, Helvetica (released in 1957 by Swiss type designer Max Miedinger) was purposefully designed as a neutral font as a statement against nationalism (with WWII having recently ended). Iit was meant to be functional, clear, and timeless without anterior motives.

Blackletter and it's relatives were used across Europe. It was commonly seen in Germany... until it was banned by the Nazis in 1941.

In spite of this, there was still a strong perception that it was German and lead to a rejection of the font by others. This influenced other fonts (like helvetica and futura) to be less ornate as a way to distance them.
