A year ago I asked for help to go all-in on @DisDebrief. An incredible response let me continue to build a newsletter and library relied upon by the disability movement all over the world. See an annual stocktake and ask for help doing more in 2024: disabilitydebrief.org/debrie…

Learning from twitter has shaped a lot of my life and career over the more than a decade I've been on here. Keeping up with disability twitter led to my current project writing about international news. But it's time to find new homes. Find me on @desibility.bsky.social

This is tough one, I think we're all navigating how we use AI. AI is a great assistant, and I use it as such. But we need to be careful about letting it take over. In my own work, I prioritise hearing directly from disabled people. #AXSChat

Yes. And this lack of accountability reinforces exclusion and silences our voices. Investigative journalism has the power to challenge these dynamics, exposing hidden decisions and helping to ensure disabled people are not just consulted but leading the conversation. #AXSChat

Reporting and media are essential for democratic exchange. Transparency and accountability are especially needed in issues that affect marginalized populations. Too much has been done in the name of disabled people without us knowing anything about it. #AXSChat

By the way another thing for folk interested in this is to look up @TheDJP_, a unique project working with disabled journalists in the global south and coming out with brilliant documentaries and reporting #AXSChat

The first challenge is getting our foot - or wheel, or cane - in the door. Journalism opportunities are extremely limited. The answer is simple: support disabled journalists and their work. Money, clicks, it all counts. We get the media we pay attention to. #AXSChat

Too much of disability discourse comes from people in the US/UK. I appreciate I'm another British white guy but in my work @DisDebrief I work hard to cover stories not told elsewhere and bring in authors from all over. #AXSChat

I think it needs to look at what's working as well as what isn't – too many either take one side or the other. In my reporting I try hard for balance. In this piece on the crisis at International Disability Alliance I got comment from all sides: disabilitydebrief.org/debrie… #AXSChat

Journalism gives us tools to get to the facts, and a framework through which we can explore the most sensitive and critical subjects. And putting the facts out there is critical for transparency and accountability of our movement. #AXSChat

I write @DisDebrief to put a “disability lens” on world news. For me this means connecting lived experience with wider issues of policy and activism. See more about what I mean: disabilitydebrief.org/debrie… #AXSChat

We need reporting not just to share what impacts disabled people in the wider world but also how the organisations that are meant to be supporting us work. I'm not obsessed that every reporter on disability be a disabled person, but we definitely need more. #AXSChat

What went wrong at the International Disability Alliance (IDA)? At the start of the year an independent review found “signals of mismanagement” and alleged “abuse of power” by its leadership. Around $850,000 was identified as “financial irregularities”. 1/

The review scrutinises the former IDA leadership with findings that include an allegations of “clear signs of mismanagement and corrupt behaviour” and of examples of “bullying, harassment, and undue/inappropriate interference”. IDA has accepted the report in full. 2/

In my view this was a collective failure. We need to understand what happened to make sure it doesn't happen again. See the article for exclusive reactions from those involved: disabilitydebrief.org/debrie… With illustration from @sonakshaiyengar 🙏🏼
