Michelangelo’s “secret room” in Florence.
Hidden beneath the Medici Chapels, this small chamber was discovered in 1975 after being sealed and forgotten for decades. Its walls are covered with delicate charcoal and chalk drawings that some experts attribute to Michelangelo.
According to one theory, Michelangelo may have hidden here in 1530, after supporting the short-lived Florentine Republic against the Medici family. While staying underground, he is believed to have sketched studies connected to his major works.
For decades, the room was closed to the public to protect the fragile drawings. Today, access is still extremely limited — only small groups can enter by reservation, for a short visit inside one of Florence’s most mysterious Renaissance spaces.
