Check out our newest pub in JCB! rupress.org/jcb/article/221/… Decreased mitochondrial import from stress activates mtUPR, but then how do all those mitochondrial-saving expressed genes get back in? (1/2)

We find that the mtUPR also increases import that may help all these great proteins get in and save the organelle. This increased mitochondrial import is also essential for lifespan extension. If you are curious about mitochondria and longevity - this paper is for you!

Huge congratulations to @tayladhunter on a well deserved Goldwater Scholarship! Tayla did a fantastic job in our lab this past summer working with @holly_gildea. Any MD/PhD program would be lucky to have her!
Congratulations to @tayladhunter who has been awarded the Goldwater Scholarship! The Goldwater honors outstanding undergrads pursuing research science. If you're recruiting for MD/PhD programs, take note!! Big things coming her way 🎉🥳

Excited to share our new paper! We found that aged mice exhibited an exaggerated UPRER signature - lipid and protein synthesis overall were more suppressed, however, canonical UPRER proteins were translated at higher rates in aged mice under ER stress. onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/…

And another preprint from @dillinlab @philfrankino @holly_gildea showing that overexpression of hsf-1 in only the 4 glial cells of #Celegans is enough to induce a heat shock response and longevity 9/7 biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/…

Another preprint from our lab is up now. In this one, @philfrankino et al. found and characterized a role for SKN-1 as a surveillance factor. Turns out it can monitor and respond to genetic perturbation of amino acid catabolism pathways and alter multiple stress resistances!
SKN-1 is a metabolic surveillance factor that monitors amino acid catabolism to control stress resistance biorxiv.org/cgi/content/shor… #bioRxiv

Check out our latest paper by graduate student @holly_gildea which describes how glia can signal a pan organismal heat shock response independent of canonical neuronal circuits! Great work, Holly and team! @UCBerkeleyNeuro @berkeleyMCB
