Seraphim "Joe" Fortes (c.1863-1922) came to Vancouver from Trinidad (some say Barbados) in 1885. He became the city's first lifeguard, creating the position by volunteering at English Bay. He taught a generation how to swim and saved dozens from drowning. #BlackHistoryMonthYVR
