I saw a tweet calling Americans "essentially third world" for being so flattered by foreigners posting about how cool our country is (showing insecurity ig).I feel like it's a bad comparison since we're the most studied society on earth in a decidedly hostile information environ.

And really, a lot of the flattery comes from the discovery of how rich our society is. I never would have imagined that free refills or prompt service would be things that I take for granted. Is it really. reflection of insecurity to take pride in your material abundance?

Yeah, there's problems with this place and yeah, there are engagement baiters taking advantage of the dearth of pro-America content, but I just don't see how the pathology is at all like that of a third-world nationalist. We have almost zero damage control going on, normally.

It seems the circumstances have aligned such that I need to spend ~6 hours studying chemistry.

To be honest, I feel like there's something almost intentional in the fact that the British lost a lot of their culinary culture in the same conflict that they lost most of their empire. Like, the fact that they're a fallen society is so permeating that it affects their cuisine.

Imagine if this was a normal criminal penalty. You get sentenced and they just spin a wheel to figure out which impoverished and unstable African country you get sent to.

I find it kinda funny that Japan's stock market is about 2x the size of South Korea's but Korea has 2 companies with capitalization in the top 20 globally, whilst Japan doesn't appear until top 60. I feel that this says something about Japan (chaebol aside) but idk what.

WRT the need for infinite growth for the economy, it's actually more about total factor productivity than it is about just growing the GDP. It's actually not much like cancer (whose metabolism has very low TFP) at all. Also, if the growth stopped, the poor would die first.

to be honest I think it more likely that a woman love me for what I post than that a woman leave me over it.
So many of you are going to get girlfriends that immediately break up with you once they see what you tweet. So so many of you.

the craziest part about this is that this is basically how the göktürks came to be, according to their own origin stories

Something that I find mysterious is when I read about "successful" or "unsuccessful" attempts to reconstruct a dead language's words/pronunciation. I'm sure there's a logical process, but it's very much a black box to me. I can't even conceive of where they begin.

One of my middle school history classes had a "communism day" where all of the kids were manufacturing little paper trinkets for candy. When they ran out of candy, they paid the kids in wrappers. Any kid who didn't meet their quota was disappeared to in-school suspension.

Pretty good day today. Got some important stuff done. Also saw my dad for the first time in about a week and he told me that I look visibly less sick than I have for the past ~2 months, which is good since I've also felt significantly better these past few days.

But also I was thinking I was looking kinda chubby in the face despite no change in my weight, which makes me wonder if I looked a bit too skinny before and just got used to that.
