Today, we launched a new report on the Scottish GP Workforce and Socioeconomic Health Inequalities.
Thanks to @heraldscotland for covering the report and its calls for @ScotGov to support GPs working in deprived areas.
The full report can be read here➡️ rcgp.org.uk/getmedia/263e368…
Our GP committee has passed a motion stating the role of Physician Associates in general practice is fundamentally unsafe. They are calling for an immediate stop to PAs managing undifferentiated patients with a longer term phasing out of the role entirely.

The BMA GP committee has passed a motion to:
🟢 Completely phase out PAs in general practice due to the role being fundamentally unsafe for patients
🟢 An immediate halt of existing PAs seeing undifferentiated patients

This chart is a scandal.
Teachers, doctors and others earning fairly ordinary salaries can face marginal tax rates of more than 60%, and sometimes approaching 80%.
Rachel Reeves should reform income tax. Thread:
(1/10) Another patient has died due to a PA.
Most concerned about PAs have probably heard of a few key cases already:
-Emily Chesterton, died following misdiagnosis of a PE
-Christopher Tucker, died in hospital following an inappropriate procedure & poor antibiotic management
Genuine question & not dumping on any role…
Nobody could argue that:
No-one can do the job of a GP better than a GP
In the same way that:
No-one can do the job of a pharmacist better than a pharmacist
No-one can do the job of a paramedic better than a paramedic
No-one can do then job of a nurse better than a nurse
So why, when there are swathes of unemployed GPs (experienced & newly qualified) & thousands of doctors unable to get into GP training…
Are we pouring money into getting alternate non-doctor roles to fulfill the role of a GP rather than using that money to fund GPs themselves for their own jobs?
There’s been a hive of Scottish activity at #RCGPAC24 🏴
Still time today to visit the @scotgov stand to play Tunnocks Jenga, check out poster presentations, and visit the RCGP stand to learn how to get involved in Scottish Faculties and advocacy.

Retention is critical- we cannot lose GPs at the height of their expertise. Career losses happening across all career stages- rethink the NHS Long Term Workforce Plan- we cannot support a 4% rise in GPs when the increase in Consultants projected to be 49%.

What’s happening to our newly-qualified GPs is a national scandal. Our surveys show almost half have still not got a GP job- each applying for an average of 13 jobs.
The poorest communities are hardest hit again.
Yet another referral rejection from a hospital.
Hospitals are reducing waiting lists by rejecting patients and passing them around the system.
It seems that waiting lists have become more important than actually treating humans.
Whatever happened to choice @wesstreeting ?
