I finally got around to reading the fall '22 @audubonsociety magazine & it was a lovely surprise to see this photo of @jill_tengeres with an Aleutian Tern (handled with permits for her grad research @OregonState) & a link to my story on the imperiled bird! audubon.org/aleutiantern
ALT Picture of a page from the fall 2022 Audubon Magazine that has a photo of two women focused on a small white bird that is receiving a metal band. The text in focus says: Down Tern. A small black-capped seabird with a striking eye stripe and sooty feathers, the Aleutian Tern is one of Alaska's lesser-known species. It might also be one of the nation's most imperiled. Recent research suggests that the bird's US population has crashed by as much as 80 percent in the past few decades. Now, a group of biologists has launched an ambitious plan to count every Aleutian Tern in the state in a race to assess how dire the situation is--and whether the bird should be considered endangered. Read more about their efforts at audubon.org/aleutiantern.
In 2010, a novel fungal disease started killing ‘ōhi‘a, an important tree for Hawaii's critically endangered birds. Mostly limited to #Hawaii and #Kauai, the fungi's spread to the birds' last refuges could be disastrous.
My latest for @audubonsociety:

Terns have been heavily impacted by HPAI. Thousands of Sandwich Terns reported in the Netherlands, and a recent paper describes the thousands more affected in Germany, in addition to other seabirds.

ALT Photo by Derrick Z. Jackson of a large colony of Atlantic puffins standing on a rocky ledge. Dozens of little white-chested, black-backed birds with deep orange feet and large orange, yellow, and grayish blue beaks can be seen across the image, including one in the foreground spreading its wings as it stares at the camera.

I met Pimachiowin Aki Indigenous leaders in Winnipeg a few weeks ago and am so impressed with their conservation & management of this amazing place! But I really need to visit during the summer now :)
