Replying to @ii_jermaine
@ii_jermaine My son is a big fan of yours. He wears #11. He had a sack last night to win our game and did a tribute for you. I'm taking him to his first Jets game on Sunday.

(a) You're robust and resilient enough to handle whatever occurs (b) You can't do anything about it anyway (c) You're looking at a big-enough picture and long-enough timeline that whatever you have to accept is still only a negligible blip on the way to your goal.

Sean McVay just defined courage in one sentence: "Doing what's right in spite of your fears. Even if it costs you something." Won a Super Bowl at 36. Courage isn't talent. It's a cost most people refuse to pay. Someone out there is living the life you want. Not smarter. Not more skilled. Not more resourceful. They just paid the bill. You walked away. What's the thing you're still avoiding because it might cost you something?

Your performance issue isn’t because of talent. It’s because of communication. It’s because of clarity. It’s because of trust. It’s because of connection. It’s because of culture. Your performance issue is a leadership issue.

Don’t hold others accountable if you aren’t willing to be held accountable. Don’t expect others to live a standard you aren’t willing to live. Don’t tell others to sacrifice for the team if you won’t sacrifice for the team. Leaders go first. Leaders define culture.

"Of course talent matters... But 'effort is worth twice as much as talent.' So, if we are going to hold on to this bias, and continue to recruit the most talented kids, we better learn how to develop their grit. Because grit is what turns potential into reality."

This paragraph by Haruki Murakami hits very hard: “Once the storm is over, you won’t remember how you made it through, how you managed to survive. You won’t even be sure, whether the storm is really over. But one thing is certain. When you come out of the storm, you won’t be the same person who walked in. That’s what this storm’s all about.”

A hard truth nobody wants to hear is that there is so much nonsense and bullshit out there and if you really want to work toward excellence at something you need to be focused and committed and consistent and nail the fundamentals and surround yourself with good people and think in years not days and exit the hot-take, alpha bro and sister slop-stream in favor of studying serious people, working with serious coaches, and reading serious books. There's never been a shortage of pseudo excellence. The real thing will always be counterculture. It presents a great opportunity for those willing to pursue it.
