In med school, I learned that Huntington's disease was one of the most devastating inherited conditions. It caused progressive neurological decline, starting around age 30. There was no treatment. Now, Huntington's has been treated for first time. This is why we fund science.

As I told faculty this week, "Our goal is ... preparing students not just for their professional lives, but for a lifetime of growth and service to the common good." Here are 150 students in the first day of a course on the "Good Life." They get it. philosophy.duke.edu/courses/…

I need to acknowledge our director of grad studies @GregoryRSL for treating all students—current, past, accepted, & rejected—with the kindness that academia can so sadly lack. He’s going viral on Reddit for his thoughtful rejection letters, & I hope other programs follow suit.

We mourn the death of Professor Philip Benfey, who passed away last Tuesday. A prominent scholar, he served as departmental chair during a challenging time, hired many of our faculty members and mentored a generation of plant molecular biologists. today.duke.edu/2023/10/duke-…

Seriously huge opportunity to join a great research group. I’d apply but just took a new job.
In anticipation of some new funding expected later this month, I'm seeking a postdoctoral scholar to lead research examining how motivational dynamics shift during & after a fluid intake intervention.

Our commitment to access and affordability continues at Carolina. We will provide free tuition and required fees for incoming undergraduates from North Carolina whose families make less than $80,000 per year beginning with the incoming class in 2024. unc.live/44BvkK4

Sure, these new GLP-1/GIP drugs are remarkable But if insurers don’t add them to formularies and pts can’t afford them… how remarkable are they *really*? I mean… we’re talking about novel meds that: 1. Decrease body weight 2. Reduce HA1c 3. Decrease fatty liver in NAFLD 4. Decrease LDL 5. ?reduce alcohol craving Cardio metabolic syndrome can be reversed… yet the drugs will remain inaccessible to those who need it most.
