In this post, I will provide tips on answering the Personal Statements. In the past, I have written several threads on graduate admission essays, and I encourage you to check them out:

You're required to write six essays of 350 words maximum! Be concise- please try to use the STAR approach (see the 2nd link attached above).
Without further ado, let's start.
1) Describe why you have chosen your intended program of study at McGill University and how you foresee this program to impact your short and long-term personal and career goals?
Here, you should briefly describe your (academic) journey and how that guides your chosen MSc program. Is there any specific question you'd like to address that will have a broader significant impact? For example- when you were young, Cancer might have cut short the life of someone you love, and that informed your decision to study Biochemistry/Biomedical Engineering. Apparently, undergrad is not enough to address this problem, and you need an advanced degree (e.g., MSc) to help solve this problem (the reason why you've chosen the program). Also, the kind of research, professors and facilities in that department can help solve this problem better at McGill than anywhere else (why you've chosen McGill). In the short term, this MSc will allow you to do cutting-edge research in Cancer Biology and contribute to ongoing Cancer research efforts. Also, you'll be more equipped with knowledge and experiences that can be transferred to young scientists where you want to solve the problem (long-term).
2) The Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program aims to help educate the youth of today to be leaders of tomorrow, how do you intend to use the knowledge and skills gained during your scholarship to positively impact the African Continent?
Here, please provide solid plans of how you plan to achieve this (can be hypothetical at this stage but should sound convincing). For example, through the knowledge and collaboration I hope to have acquired, I hope to return to Africa to work as a Consultant at the Federal Ministry of Health. Specifically, I intend to set up a cancer research institute where innovative research on Cancer will be conducted. Also, I plan to strengthen collaboration between my NGO (ABC NGO) with national and international organizations. At NGO ABC, we train young people on how to eat well and stay healthy, and I hope to transfer my knowledge and build their capacity through hands-on training and workshops in line with SDG goals.
3) Given the eligibility criteria and the ethos of the Scholars Program, why do you believe that you would be a good candidate? What are some of the skills and attributes that you will bring to the Scholars community on Campus?
Here, you need to sell yourself. What are your achievements thus far? How did your background shape you to be who you are today? Quantify your success/impact and let them know that you'd achieve much more if given the opportunity (the scholarship). For instance, despite my humble background, I was able to graduate as the only first-class graduate in my department of over 50 students. Aside from Academics, I also led over 23000 students of the University as the Student Union President in 2022. During this role, I impacted A, B, and C and helped D, E, and F. As a Mastercard scholar, I will bring my academic and collaborative skills to the McGill scholars' community. I'll work to unite all scholars on campus and create a sense of family by organizing monthly meetings for check-in. In addition, I will strengthen the link with Alumni as that will be needed post-graduation.
4) Which transformative leadership skills and competencies do you hope to develop if selected for the scholarship?
You can talk about some areas you'd like to develop (building relationships, active listening, etc.)- for example, in addition to developing my collaborative and academic skills, I also hope to build my relationships with other international students and become a visionary thinker. I believe meeting with students from across the globe and learning from them will allow me to develop these crucial skills. Also, the opportunity to participate in the Baobab conference sounds exciting as I will be able to meet other scholars from different schools/continents, exchange ideas and form a stronger collaboration that can develop Africa.
5) Please summarize your current and past leadership experiences, community involvement and/or volunteer engagement.
Here, you can summarize all your leadership experiences. Using the STAR approach will be helpful here. State the Situation, your Task, your Action and the Result. Don't skip anything. Even if you were a class rep, state it (how you present it matters- make it interesting). E.g. I was a Class governor for over 50 students for over four years! I coordinated the affairs of these students, including meeting with the course Professors and providing timely information required for their academic success. OR I was the president of my community group. As part of my roles, I organized a tree planting program as part of our climate change efforts. I led a team of 10 executives to meet with politicians and stakeholders. We were able to get seedlings and approval and planted the trees. We also assigned a member of the community to watch over the trees, and we have been receiving progress reports!
6) When have you experienced failure, either at work or school etc., and what did you do to overcome or address this?
Reflect on your journey and present a scenario when you failed at something. What did you do to make it better? For instance, suppose you had a low grade, and it was due to a failure in one course. You can present like this- due to your health, you were (unavoidably) absent from classes during the mid-semester exams of your 2nd year! When you came back, you realized it was a few weeks to the exam, and despite all your efforts, it affected your result, and you could not achieve a passing grade. While this was painful, you made a commitment to yourself to increase your efforts. This means studying for over 10 hours daily, and you passed the final exam eventually. Ideally, you should present a more convincing story. State clearly the problem, how you solved it and the lessons learned. Remember the STAR approach.
Feel free to ask me any questions, and I'll answer them at my earliest convenience. Also, you can RT to share with all applicants!
N.B.- I'm too busy this month with several deadlines and won't be able to personally "review" any essays! But I hope these tips help, at least for a start.
Good luck!
