Gm🖤 One of the funniest misconceptions in contemporary art is the idea that pastel dusts and colored pencils are somehow “cheap” or “childlike” materials. In reality, many of the pigments, papers, oils, and drawing tools I use are museum grade, highly archival (min. 150 yrs), and built to survive for generations under proper conservation conditions. At some point, I’m thinking of making a detailed video about the actual material quality behind my works, permanence ratings, pigment density, lightfastness, conservation standards, pricing, and why these mediums are far more serious (and technically demanding) than people assume. I think a lot of opinions would shift after seeing what these materials actually are, how they behave, and what goes into preserving them. I also use a very specific hybrid technique that is entirely my own, somewhere between drawing, painting, powdered pigment work, and oil-based surface fusion. Would love to properly introduce that process someday. 🩸

GM🍕👁️ Why does Occult Pizza feel so strangely tempting? We spoke about internet religion, seductive images, simulacra and sacred bad ideas with @IshikaGuha2 before my Suburbs Highlight🖤 (1) 🪡 𝗔𝗻 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄 𝗔𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗢𝗰𝗰𝘂𝗹𝘁 𝗣𝗶𝘇𝘇𝗮 𝗜𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗸𝗮 𝗚𝘂𝗵𝗮: What initially inspired the concept for "Occult Pizza"? Was it a specific image, dream, cultural reference, or moment of dark humour that led to combining occult iconography with something as mundane and comforting as pizza? 𝗗𝗼𝗹𝗰𝗲 𝗣𝗮𝗴𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗲: My works usually develop like a chain reaction, almost like a series of small accidents. It all begins in a single moment -a powerful spark that ignites the whole fire- appearing in my mind as a seductive apparition, something amusing to play with. It usually derives from a situation I experienced in real life, an emotion I felt intensely, viral posts I keep encountering on social media, or a new trend. Occult Pizza started from a pretty simple observation: the internet has its own religion now. Scroll for five minutes and you’ll see the same icons over and over again: food, cats, seductive girls, beautiful eyes, bright colors, juicy dishes, plants, soft skin. It’s like a strange visual liturgy repeating itself on every feed, and even trending art forms start to shape themselves around these repeating simulacra. At some point I realized we don’t just look at images anymore. We ritualize them. People photograph their food before eating it. They post their lives before living them, as if one click on the like button were the highest form of approval. Images circulate, multiply, and become strangely sacred. Jean Baudrillard once wrote about simulacra: ‘a world where images stop representing reality and start replacing it’. I like that idea. It feels very accurate for the age of Instagram. So in Occult Pizza, the pizza becomes a kind of altar made from internet clichés: eyes, seduction, food, a cat, a slightly demonic fairy girl… everything the algorithm secretly loves, everything that helps images circulate and gain value. The work isn’t really about consuming something sacred. It’s about how images themselves have become sacred. And like most sacred things on the internet, it’s a little ridiculous, a little seductive… and probably a bad idea.
