A light bulb moment for me was realizing that much of the talk about student "motivation" (how to boost it or why a given kid lacks it) is really code for talking about compliance - that is, the extent to which students do whatever we tell them.

What if the challenges ChatGPT and other AI poses for conventional methods of student assessment is just the catalyst we need to finally do away with conventional grading altogether and implement more authentic and humane ways to document learning? #ChatGPT #highered #ungrading

Accommodating depression: A student struggling with major depression fell off the face of the earth for a few weeks. They resurfaced and asked if they could make up the work they missed. I said of course. They were confused. "Will I get points marked off?" 1/5

I've long argued that grades-and-tests predict nothing but future grades-and-tests (bit.ly/3LNNXkq). Almost a decade ago, Google figured out that the GPAs & test scores of job applicants were “worthless” for deciding whom to hire: goo.gl/HcPbV

When groups defer to the most assertive person in the room, they reward confidence over competence. The danger of speaking with conviction is that it can stifle critical thinking and silence dissent. We learn more from people who explore ideas than those who attack and defend.

OK, tried out a new unit in my intro to philosophy class, and it is my new favorite unit: "Are Grades Bullshit?" I have never seen intro students more intensely engaged, more edge-of-their-seat, and more mind-blown. Thread:

There seems to be some bemusement in the media about efforts to decolonise the curriculum in mathematics. Some think this means removing concepts from the curriculum to replace them by others. Let’s look at one example. Why are there 360° in a circle? 1/12

It's easier to fill gaps in competence than gaps in character. Even if people have strong experience, it's a mistake to hire or promote them if they have weak values. Knowledge and skills can be learned. Principles like integrity, humility, and generosity are tougher to teach.

Ok, I realize that my obsession with #Encanto is perhaps a little silly for a nearly 50-year-old professor, but these lyrics are giving me life. Like this one: “What can you do when you know who you wanna be is imperfect, but I'll still be okay?” Food for thought, @MacBHSc

Always just give the extension. It’s such a small thing that can make a big difference.

Not succeeding at first is totally normal. If you develop a great Plan B, it’s easier to deal when Plan A doesn’t work out. My career path is thanks to a number of Plan Bs that became Plan A and I could not be happier about how that worked out. Failure is inevitable, not a flaw.
