In many ways, Ines Alphaโs (
@inesalpha) work is about the surface. A pioneer of what she termed โ3D makeupโ, the Paris-based artist has developed a practice around ethereal, fantastical Augmented Reality filters that add ornament to the face. Through her technique, she interrogates the โsurfaceโ on multiple levels: metaphorically, through challenging superficial beauty standards, or materially, through the exploration of physical and virtual skin.
Underneath the surface, there is a tension that informs Inesโ signature style. Known for its pastel colours, otherworldly forms and aquatic references, her work holds in balance that which is cute, but also mildly unsettling. We asked Ines to share five objects that serve as key inspirations to her practice, allowing us to better understand the contexts and references that inform her work.
