Finally, the Freedom Warrior Award is home! Veteran journalist David Makali receives the Freedom Warrior award from his son, John, at their home in Bungoma. Kenya Editors Guild honoured Makali at the 8th Annual Editors Convention in Kilifi for his fight for press freedom. John collected the award from the KEG office in Nairobi on his father’s behalf. “The Freedom Warrior Award honours extraordinary bravery. It recognises those who have stood firm in the face of intimidation, censorship, threats, or violence. These individuals embody the very spirit of press freedom, reminding us that democracy thrives only when truth can be spoken without fear,” reads an extract from the citation for the award. Congratulations Makali👏🏾🎉 #KEGAwards #MediaFreedomKE

African editors stand at a pivotal turning point, where newsroom budgets and circulation numbers pale in comparison to the challenges ahead. As global power dynamics shift, Africa risks becoming the battleground for new imperial ambitions, resource grabs, and influence wars. With rising conflicts, democratic setbacks, and relentless attacks on press freedom, the stakes have never been higher. In an age of misinformation and fading investigative journalism, their role is crucial. The call is clear: African media must unite, collaborate, and rise boldly to protect truth, demand accountability, and secure the continent’s future.
