“Ehn, poetry is hard to read.” “Oh I’m not a poet so I can’t read and review poetry”Hello!? All you have to do is go through these 5 steps! But first, as a beginner, start with contemporary poetry (not epics or old English sonnets). Here are 3 recs: • The Years of Blood by @adedayoagarau • Jazz Negotiations by @echenduka • A Black Bird Sings About Loss by @justblacc_ Now the hows: 1. Read first time for context 2. Read second time for rhythm/cadence 3. Dissect (tone, structure, repetitions) 4. Ask: What is this poem doing? 5. Share your thoughts. Easy peasy. Now, tag someone and buddy read a collection together!

My unpopular opinion is that Nigeria needs to stop! We need to pause and acknowledge the trauma we are living through. Unions need to go on strike. Everyone needs to take a week long moment of silence. Going on like nothing is happening, is inhumane and insane. Phew!

I’m currently reading a jazz infused poetry collection and my oh my! This is why i am always in awe of writers! He genuinely embodied the structural elements of jazz in poetry! Now, i’m learning more about jazz😫. The collection in question is Jazz Negotiations by @echenduka and i will be hosting a reading with him soon!

On Saturday April 18, my colleague Sarah Le Van Seaman (Violin/Voice) and I performed live at the FIGS Graduate Conference. Our program titled ‘Latent Musical Histories: Vocality, Ephemerality, and the Folk Tradition’ included music by Severac, Händel, Schumann, and Viadort. Listen to the second movement (scherzo) from our performance of Pauline Viardot’s Sonatina in A Minor for Violin and Piano. Note on the piano: The model is Erard, a 19th century historic French instrument! Quite fitting for the program considering our performance of works by French composers. 📍: Orrery Pavilion, Kislak Center (Penn Library), University of Pennsylvania Video credit: Marcus Papandrea
