✅ PhDone!
Last Friday I defended my thesis titled "Upgrading and downgrading of global value chains in European regions: An evolutionary approach" at Utrecht University!
Now I'm coming back to Spain. I'll be working at the Department of Applied Economics II @unisevilla!
🔍 How do digital capabilities shape tech adoption and productivity in European regions?
New study by @StefanApostol4 & @eduherro explores the role of relatedness and complexity in digitalisation dynamics.

Why do some regions climb the global value chain while others stumble?
It’s less what you have, more who you link with, say @eduherro & co-authors in I&I.
Complementarity—not proximity—is the magic dust. Knowing who may count more than knowing what.

Regions prosper in #GVCs not by chance, but by building on what they do well, say @eduherro & co in PiRS.
Functional specialisation, rooted in related capabilities, determines whether they climb to high value roles or languish in low-complexity traps. doi.org/10.1016/j.pirs.2024.…

We show how economic complexity metrics can be used to measure both functional upgrading and downgrading in global value chains.
This allows to explore the complexity of regions depending on the kind of functions they develop across GVCs.
Regions tend to functionally upgrade their GVCs towards more complex functions that are related to functions in which they are specialised. And regions are more likely to functionally exit and downgrade in global value chains when they are not specialised in related functions.
