I was putting together a syllabus for a class a couple of years ago, and thought, "Why don't I do this for my PhD students?" So I've been slowly writing a syllabus for them (v0.1): docs.google.com/document/d/1…

We didn't bring in the snipers or the riot gear. Let's hope we keep it that way.

This article by @ceciliakang and @satariano correctly identifies the knowledge gap on AI in Congress. But there's more to it than that. 1/n, n=7 As A.I. Booms, Lawmakers Struggle to Understand the Technology nyti.ms/3kIAh2x

One crosstab I want to highlight here -- the share of Americans who say that, growing up, they were at least somewhat worried about a mass shooting at their school. By age group; 65 : 4% 50-64: 6% 35-49: 11% 18-34: 38% cnn.com/2022/07/20/politics/…

The problem was never algorithms; it’s powerful companies using algorithms against our interests.
Everyone who complains about algorithms should have to spend time on Mastodon. Reverse chronological is brutal.

I’m so glad to see some faculty sharing their opinion about this. The faculty/staff side of the University can feel like a monolith for students — I was constantly shocked in my reporting to find specific faculty members that are incredibly supportive (behind closed doors.)

Issues like this are why I'm not excited about Mastodon. The designer didn't think through possible harms. And like a lot of open source projects, its conceptual anchor was an existing product/service (in this case, mid-2010s Twitter).
I think this is going to be a big problem. :-/ Mastodon hasn’t really been set up to deal with large scale coordinated harassment - and some instances are going to be bad at moderation (some intentionally, some unintentionally).
