NEW — Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett and Carmel Mayor Sue Finkam announce a new Regional Mayors' Public Safety Partnership Summit.
Mayors and police chiefs from cities in Boone, Hamilton, Hancock, Hendricks, Johnson, Madison, Marion, Morgan and Shelby counties will be invited to join in the discussions.
We're told the summit will convene multiple times during the year.
"Crime takes a toll on every community. Individuals who commit crimes often move among jurisdictions, creating challenges that no single community can solve alone. As mayors, we are committed to working together to address this critical issue on behalf of those we serve," Hogsett and Finkam said in a joint statement.
Details about the public safety summit are expected at a later time.
The announcement comes a week after an arrest in a violent carjacking sparked a public disagreement between Finkam and Marion County Prosecutor Ryan Mears.
"We have residents in central Indiana committing crimes, and Marion County can't put them in jail and keep them in jail. It's unacceptable," Finkam told me in an interview May 29. "We have to do a better job figuring out a solution, and it starts again with someone having some leadership in Marion County."
