The throughline between this Wired story on non-trad men looking for tradwives, @stephmurrayyyy’s recent Tablet story on the rise of modern-day matchmakers, and the general finger-pointing in the battle of the sexes is a tendency to look at people as consumer products.

my latest story for @WIRED is about the insane world of tech bro matchmaking, and how they're all looking for "traditional" wives. "They don't want a bossy bitch lady. They want a woman who knows how to respect a man," one told me. wired.com/story/matchmakers-…

Rich tech bros are paying matchmakers $25k to set them up with trad wives. And all I have to say is....the utter AUDACITY of these men

it does make me laugh though that the women they're asking to be set up with hate them

apparently we're at the point where we can watch one of the biggest artists of our generation slowly die in real time, but we're not supposed to say anything bc that would be body-shaming, even though there is nothing body-positive whatsoever about the illness she's suffering from or the media continuing to prop her up as beautiful and aspirational

The Spurs know how to TAKE the lead, they just don't know how to HOLD the lead. And that's really the most important part of the lead: the holding

a) no, they’re not. The movie received a small amount of funding from an independent org that supports Israeli filmmakers. It wasn’t Israel state funded. It wasn’t even distributed in Israel bc the govt hated it so fucking much. B) if anyone is aware of a “Nazi Germany-financed film that was highly critical of Hitler” I would love to know about it
Replying to @ejdickson
His films are financed by Israel So, you clearly would have been fine with films financed by Nazi Germany if they criticized Hitler or films financed by apartheid South Africa if they criticized Pik Botha

this is sadly very true. EDs are by their nature competitive illnesses — it's not enough to be thin, you have to be the thinnest, etc. and culturally i don't think we're even close to being ready to having this conversation
The thing about the skeletonification of girl celebs right now is that it’s connected to ozempic - it’s not enough to simply be skinny when anyone can supposedly achieve it. Extreme anorexia becomes a status marker.

So the Israeli filmmaker being boycotted: A) has totally disavowed Israel B) does not live in Israel C) produced and distributed his movie in France D) is so loathed by Israel that the entire country has refused to distribute his movie guys at what point are we gonna start straight up boycotting bagels

This is the kind of sterling logic that will invariably lead to a Tucker Carlson presidency
The filmmaker seems like a decent enough guy but this completely misses the point of the cultural boycott. It's not about the individual. Lapid's work, no matter how self-critical, is still perceived as a cultural export of Israel. It normalizes a place that is anything but normal! The film's mere existence gives the impression that there's some possibility of a complex societal debate going on within Israel when in fact the filmmaker himself has literally abandoned the country as completely hopeless! It ultimately serves to humanize and center the anguish of the Israeli perpetrators while treating its victims as faceless plot devices; the most Palestinians can ever aspire to be in this sort of cultural production is nothing more than, as Tareq Baconi puts it, "the canvas upon which the Jewish psychodrama takes place".
