Follower numbers don't matter, especially nowadays on X/Twitter, where your followers aren't even shown your posts on their timeline, but I was closing in on 200,000 when Elon took over, and that was going to be a cool milestone for a numpty like me! π
Needless to say, Elon killed growth here, my account grew naturally over years, but it just flatlined once Elon made all the changes 'for the better'. π
A bigger problem is getting seen... most of my followers don't even see my posts anymore, unless they interact very often with them, or they've added me to a List so they don't miss my posts. π
I started my little business back in 2019, when my Twitter was booming... I used to get 15million views every month, and 3000 new followers a month!
Now I get about a million views and maybe 30 new followers if I'm lucky.
My content hasn't changed, I'm doing exactly what I was doing back then! I very consistently post 5 or 6 new bird photos every single day, and have done so for over 10 years! π
Let's just say there's no way I'd have had the confidence to start a new business if I was considering it now. Bird photography is very low in the algorithm ranking, unless it's AI generated crap! π
I work so hard, it's constant, I rarely relax and I've suffered with my mental and physical health this year... I've even considered folding my business and giving up.. but I'm not a quitter!
I have more calendars left unsold than any year previously. It's harder to predict how they will sell because it all depends on views from my social media followers, mainly here on X/Twitter, so the new algorithm makes it very difficult for people with small businesses that rely on social media to survive. π
I know I occasionally have a little moan about where this place is at, and I'm aware that nothing will change, I'll keep harking for the golden days of Twitter, but it is what it is.
Regarding the algorithm... commenting regularly apparently keeps accounts in your feed, as do all the other interactions such as liking and reposting and bookmarking. π
Anyway... if you're curious and don't yet follow me, please consider it if you like genuine bird photography, no AI at all... and open, honest, and occasionally humorous discourse. πβ€οΈ
