I invite @volker_turk to North Cyprus, to meet with the community who his organisation has systematically isolated from all international fora for 62 years - as punishment for their refusal to submit Instead of angry words, better to correct your errors
I condemn disinformation campaigns & attempts to undermine the credibility of the UN human rights system, including @UN_SPExperts mandate holders. Criticism & debate are legitimate & necessary; efforts to intimidate, discredit, or even sanction, are not. They are unacceptable. - UN Human Rights Chief @volker_turk

Lots of talking about how good it is to respect human rights. Not much to say about when the UN withholds them in order to blackmail a community into accepting the theft of their sovereignty. Turkish Cypriots: Embargoed since 4th March 1964. Time to end the farce
“Human rights are the glue that binds us together. When we join forces to strengthen those bonds, we build a better world for all.” Warning of serious human rights challenges, @UNHumanRights chief @volker_turk urges countries to choose dialogue over division. #HRC62

We look forward to the UN advancing the human rights of Turkish Cypriots which they have chosen to withhold. Their myopic view of Cyprus - which includes recognition of 1 partner at the cost of the other - has failed for 62 years. And it is the Turkish Cypriots who pay the price
The UN Human Rights Council works to advance human rights worldwide, helping ensure everyone enjoys the protections guaranteed by international law. The @UN_HRC's 62nd session begins at @UNGeneva on Monday. ohchr.org/en/hr-bodies/hrc/r…

What does this say of the UN’s decision to oblige its member countries to withhold the human rights of the Turkish Cypriot community in lieu of a settlement in Cyprus - for the last 62 years… despite the Turkish Cypriots agreeing to a settlement. How much longer @volker_turk?
“Human rights improve lives, heal divisions, and create opportunities,” @UNHumanRights chief @volkerturk told the @UN Human Rights Council at the opening of its 62nd session in Geneva. “Huge majorities of people say they want more human rights – not less,” he said. #HRC62

Or, alternatively, the absence of a pressing reason for one particular side to change course, because they already benefit from the status quo (recognition over isolation), which explains their inviting foreign militaries. A move likely lead to more - not less - entrenchment
Why the real obstacle to a Cyprus settlement may not be a lack of ideas, but the absence of any pressing reason for either side to change course, by Dionysis Dionysiou #politistothepoint #cyprus #PeaceTalks en.politis.com.cy/opinion/10…

Hopefully, @UN_CYPRUS took the time to explain that the UN chooses to isolate the Turkish Cypriot Youth, and in so doing, prejudices their education today and their future tomorrow, by blocking trade, travel and communication And that even the opportunity to play sport is stolen.
Earlier this week, the Technical Committee on Youth concluded its two-day visit to Brussels under the auspices of the United Nations and with the support of the European Union. During the visit, members met with High Representative/Vice-President, Kaja Kallas, and the @UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy on #Cyprus, María Ángela Holguín. The discussions underscored the importance of meaningful youth participation in fostering trust, dialogue, and cooperation across the island. #UNCyprusTalks

The human rights of Turkish Cypriots have been denied to them - directly by the UN - since March 1964 The UN imposes all encompassing embargoes, as punishment for their refusal to accept the theft of their sovereignty in Cyprus The UN is the problem. Not the solution
Human rights are under pressure in every region of the world. Our  latest Annual Report provides an overview of the work undertaken by UN Human Rights over the past year to promote and protect the rights of all people, everywhere. ohchr.org/en/publications/an…

We look forward to the Turkish Cypriot people being afforded the right to travel, trade, communicate and participate in political, sporting and cultural fora. All of which has been denied to them by the very same UN, since 4th March 1964 They should be ashamed

Also, since March 1964, the UN have incorrectly recognised one half of a bi-communal partnership state (Greek Cypriots) as the legitimate Government of both communities. And it has subjected the other partner (Turkish Cypriots) to embargoes, in an attempt to force them to submit
📄 "Quiet work, big impact." 🤝🇺🇳   — María Ángela Holguín, Personal Envoy of the @UN Secretary-General on Cyprus. Since 2008, the Technical Committees have quietly preserved heritage 🏛️, advanced health 🩺, protected the environment 🌿 & built trust across #Cyprus. #UNCyprusTalks      🔗 Full remarks: uncyprustalks.unmissions.org…

I trust he was speaking on behalf of refugees on both sides of the divide. Will NFCUK be welcoming Turkish Cypriots refugees to Larnaca, Limassol, Paphos…?
Eren Ali, Campaigning for Cyprus Coordinator at NEPOMAK UK, says: “Refugees must be allowed to return home in a free Cyprus.” Justice cannot be delayed. Turkey must take its #HandsOffCyprus. What absolutely IS a barrier, is the all encompassing embargoes which the UN have imposed on the Turkish Cypriot people, at the behest of the Greek Cypriot administration, since March 1964. We don’t need Film Week. We need equal rights. embargoed.org/join

🌍🎬 “Our diversity is not a barrier, it is a bridge.” At the Chinese Film Week opening in #Cyprus, Head of #UNFICYP on the island, Khassim Diagne, marked the International Day for Dialogue among Civilizations. His message: dialogue, empathy, and storytelling, especially film, bring us closer across cultures. A powerful reminder that choosing dialogue over confrontation, investing in cross-cultural understanding and supporting initiatives that bring people together, builds a more peaceful, inclusive world. #A4P 📸 UNFICYP/Peter Šulgan

The ‘occupation’ you speak of, is by Turkish Cypriots; one half of the partnership state that the Republic of Cyprus is supposed to be. And as such, a community which shares sovereignty of the island alongside Greek Cypriots.
Genuine question, is Cyprus going to just allow Turkey occupy its entire north for another 50 years? If that was Cyprus or Greece occupying Turkey, they’d be at war everyday until they get it back. Cypriots, when are you going to get your country back?

Translation: Either do this properly. Or don’t waste everyone’s time. When insisting that the talks actually lead to an actual outcome is seen as an unacceptable precondition, it doesn’t bode well.
Erhurman Blocks 5 1 Summit: Preconditions First, Real Solution Never... Tufan Erhurman has insisted on dictating the terms and goals of any future 5 1 meeting on the Cyprus problem well in advance, effectively setting rigid preconditions that must be accepted

As long as there remains a total lack of consequence related to the intransigence being shown by Christodoulides (who appears more interested in appealing to his increasingly right wing community), we should not hold our breath for any change Enough games. End the embargoes now
The Personal Envoy of the @UN Secretary-General on #Cyprus, María Ángela Holguín, met with @Christodulides this morning. Holguín will meet with @tufanerhurman later today. #uncyprustalks 📸UNFICYP/Peter Šulgan

The Greek Cypriot Administration is an illegal occupant of the seat of Government of the Republic of Cyprus; which was created as a bi-communal partnership state, with shared sovereignty of Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots This does not work
#Turkiye is illegal occupant of EU sovereign territory. This does not work.

The memo lies beneath the Cyprus Constitution, which states that the Rep of Cyprus is a bi-communal partnership state of GCs and TCs - in which sovereignty is shared ie Where the legitimate Gov cannot be the representatives of only ONE community Tell your friend to blame EOKA B
Where’s the memo on illegal settlements in occupied northern Cyprus? Asking for a friend.

To ‘repair what conflict has broken’ we need equal rights for both communities. The equality which the UN espouses, but which they betray by imposing embargoes on the Turkish Cypriots. The UN has isolated the Turkish Cypriots for 62 years. Tree planting won’t fix the problem
Happy #WorldEnvironmentDay! 🌍💚 #GenerationRestoration is about more than planting trees 🌱: It's about repairing what conflict has broken, including nature. 🕊️🌿 In #Cyprus, #UNFICYP peacekeepers from military, @UNPOL, and civilian components are showing how small actions, like reducing waste ♻️, protecting water 💧, planting native species 🌸, and supporting local communities 🤝, can have a big impact. Join the movement. Restoration starts at our doorstep. 🚪🌍

A ‘powerful reminder’ that the Greek Cypriot diaspora are repeating the errors of the past, of today - and the root cause of the #Cyprob - by acting as if Cyprus is a Greek island, rather than their shared home with Turkish Cypriots
A wide ranging conversation & powerful reminder of the extraordinary contribution of the #UKCypriot Diaspora at today’s @CypForum with Dragons @TheoPaphitis & @toukersuleyman, facilitated by @elenicourea Hosted by @CyprusInUK & coorganised with @cyinthecity A clear demonstration that when our community comes together there is nothing we cannot achieve!

“It’s not just about uniforms, patrols and procedures…” It’s also shopping, sunbathing and medals. Medals awarded on the pretence that the UN keep the peace, rather than impose embargoes on one of the 2 sovereign communities - while being paid by the other #UNFarceInCyprus
