One basic principles of a free society is the presumption of innocence.
It means that a person is considered innocent unless and until guilt is proven according to law.
The burden is not on citizens to prove their innocence. The burden is on the state to prove its allegations.
But accusations are not proof.
The presumption of innocence exists precisely because public opinion can be wrong. It protects against trial by media, trial by social media, and the rush to judgment that can occur when emotion replaces evidence.
A free society requires fairness, due process, and the discipline to withhold judgment until the facts are properly examined.
Do you think the presumption of innocence is still respected?

🇨🇦 Canadians are being told to focus on each other.
Left versus right.
East versus west.
Urban versus rural.
Young versus old.
But while we are busy arguing amongst ourselves, many of the issues affecting everyday Canadians continue to grow.

The future of this country belongs to participants, not spectators.

“Whether people agree or disagree with the outcome, they know their voices were heard and that they participated in the decision-making process.” - @empoweredca
In Switzerland, citizens are not limited to casting a ballot every few years and hoping politicians listen.
Through referendums and citizen initiatives, Swiss citizens regularly have a direct say on important public issues.
When citizens are included, public trust grows.
I had an opportunity to converse with Eva Chipiuk, the author of Reconnect to Canada: A Guide for Empowered Canadians.
I got some swag and thanked her for producing
an easy to read book to understand the role of the Govt, jurisdictions responsibility and important case law.

Democracy works best when citizens are active participants, not passive observers.
It is time to stop fearing the public and start trusting them.
After all, if democracy means anything, it means allowing citizens to have a say in the decisions that affect their lives.
