There’s nothing to understand. It’s not a real inkling, even. It’s just a bumper sticker they play in their heads on repeat. They don’t know what it means, which makes it inscrutable to anyone with a synapse.
I don’t even understand the claim. If a bunch of rich people are willing to value the companies you have large stakes in at levels that your stakes are worth a trillion dollars, why is that not moral justification enough. Should they be forced to pay less for their shares?

I am not really into soccer but if someone can find me a chicken-sized USMNT jersey, I think we could make this happen.

I’m concerned that not a single person we’ve elected to national public office can do math, or, it seems, knows how much *they themselves spend* on anything. Like, not everyone gets stocks, I understand that. But this isn’t even remotely correct.
A 5% tax on Elon’s net worth would fund every community health center in America for the next 26 years. I’ll say it again. Tax the rich.

Even assuming Musk’s assets are cash, 4% of $1.1T is about $55B. We spend about $5B per year on community health centers at the federal level. So, you’d get…half of what Markey is saying, assuming no increase in cost, and that a forced sale of SpaceX/Starlink/etc wouldn’t have dramatic negative economic impact. So did he just pull the “26 years” number out of his own ass? Did some staffer move a decimal point? Does he not know how much he spends on health care? And if fully funded community health programs cost this much, are they a worthwhile investment of our money? Could we be doing better? It’s all really depressing lol

I’d be more sympathetic to arguments like this if the people making them contributed literally anything to society. Like, Elon Musk gave us satellite internet. Kyle here is an experiment on what happens when hair bleach seeps into your brain.
Trillionaires shouldn't exist and neither should billioniares. Tax every penny in net worth over $999 million at 100%. We can have extreme wealth concentration or a democracy but we can't have both at the same time. Pick one.

If he’s including WWII, he’s flat wrong. If he’s not, those conflicts are mostly considered American losses, in a manner of speaking. Are we already declaring Iran a loss?
JD Vance: If you go back to WW2 or every major conflict in human history, they all ended with some kind of negotiation.
Community note
World War II ended with unconditional surrenders by Germany on May 8, 1945, and Japan on September 2, 1945, rather than negotiation. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unconditi… archives.gov/milestone-docu… nationalww2museum.org/war/topics/end…

The Pope is doing what so few churchman do, exposing the complexity of immigration and the human lives destroyed by the “death routes” of human traffickers and the nations that enable them.

The sheer scale of a trillion dollars can be hard to comprehend. Let me put it in perspective. You would be able to buy 42 miles of high speed rail in California with that much money.

The deliberate inability of people to understand — on the day of SpaceX’s IPO no less — that Musk doesn’t actually have $1 trillion in cash to be grabbed by the revenuers and redistributors is kind of amazing.

No, you don't get it. He does not have $1 trillion sitting in cash, it is 99% stock in his companies. To make that wealth liquid would mean selling all that stock which would swiftly destroy *both* the companies (Tesla, SpaceX, others) and the wealth. If he sold it all, he'd end up with maybe $100b max, several hundred thousand people would be out of work, the companies ruined and many of their suppliers also ruined. Okay, but now Elon has $100b in cash, and can "solve the world's problems". $100b divided by the world's 8 billion people is $12 If you were in charge, several of the most innovative industrial companies in the world would be destroyed, hundreds of thousands out of work, and space would again close to human civilization for another generation. But everyone on earth could have one nice meal and you could revel in your altruism.

Yeah, the only rich people who should keep their obscene wealth are nepotism-baby former Blackwater stooges with hobby oyster farms, not, like, the guy who jump-started the space program
Elon Musk just became the world’s first trillionaire. Let’s make sure he’s also the last.

Political office shouldn’t be the last refuge of losers who have to get off their parents’ payroll. If you can’t get a real job, it’s not our responsibility to sustain your lifestyle.
