About 9 months ago I started posting about a printer I was building in my apartment. @aphysicist was my first verified follower. I DM’d him pretty much immediately, probably way too excited, talking about my vision for building printers in the US. He didn’t have to respond, but he did. He gave me real support at a moment where I was mostly just alone in a room trying to convince myself this thing could be real. That meant a lot. I grew up a few miles north of Detroit, so seeing one of the world’s great manufacturing cities get some stage time again feels personal. This community has given me a lot of fuel. I’m thrilled to be coming home next week and getting to talk with some cool people in person.

Got my hands on an original Macintosh, all the injection molding and sheet metal were done in the Bay Area and assembled in Fremont. Only two sheets, seemingly steel, make up the frame. One larger one for the base and one for the floppy disk drive, about 1mm and 1.6mm thick respectively. The stamping is cool to see, it’s super stiff. Some welds on the floppy disk drive too, love to see it.

Sendcutsend manufactures every sheet metal part for the printers. In fact, most of the design of the printers was around their capabilities. Not only are they price competitive with oversea options but the parts arrive without having to travel the pacific. I’m so excited to see this news, pumped for the future and scs team!

If you like tech and use the internet chances are you’ve seen one of our vids. Making educational short form content is insanely difficult, especially with a tiny team. We’ve never used AI for any sort of generative use as we believe in human first organic content. But to produce informational videos in large volume we needed a way to research many topics quickly. We want to change the way the world learns about technology while making it fun and accessible. This is just the start.

Kept seeing viral posts like this, so we hit up @Cloudflare directly to ask their CTO how it all works.
