50 years ago today, a tsunami tore through central China, hundreds of miles from the nearest ocean, taking as many as 230,000 lives with it—a result of engineering hubris and political fanaticism, which would remain a well-kept state secret for decades. chinachronicles.org/2025/07/…

Every foreign TikTok/YouTube influencer in China now: "Western media is LYING to you! But I, the China Whisperer, will do something without precedent: Show you the REAL China!” (by which I mostly mean bullet trains, pretty tourist sites and LED-lit buildings in top-tier cities).

They'll have a field day with this in China. 250 in Chinese (二百五 èr bǎi wǔ) is slang for 'idiot'.

Wowza, hadn't realized how much housing prices have fallen in China--index of 4 major cities shows drop of 40% since 2021, double the fall in US during financial crisis (though fallout was far greater in US b/c of loan defaults & banking crisis). nytimes.com/video/world/asia…

Lots of MAGA folks up in arms over this, as if there are even 500,000 Chinese students willing to study in the US at this point. Current number is about half that and has been falling steadily since 2020.
NOW - Trump says it's good to have 500,000 foreign Chinese students in the U.S. and for China to purchase U.S. farmland; otherwise, colleges and farm prices would collapse: "I frankly think that it's good that people come from other countries and they learn our culture."

There were talkers that China changed Rubio’s Chinese name translation from 卢比奥 to 鲁比奥 to subtly lift its sanctions against him. While it sounded fun, it’s NOT TRUE! There’re multiple variations of Rubio’s translation back in 2020: including 卢比奥, 鲁比奥, and even 卢比欧!

One of those "I had to go to China to find my American dream" influencers gets profiled on CNBC, hyped by Chinese state media figures...then @MrSeanHaines finds he'd previously self-published a now-removed book depicting...another side of his China life😅toosimple.substack.com/p/sta…

Almost all of these news influencers build their brand by commenting on reporting done by real journalists at legacy outlets.
A new report shows that social media ‘influencers’ and ‘independent creators’ are taking a greater role in providing news to Americans – especially younger Americans. usnews.com/news/national-new…

I'm old enough to remember when many of these Chinese scientists/researchers were chomping at the bit to do their work in the US. Turns out when you do almost everything imaginable to drive them back to China, that's where they'll make their contributions. x.com/MAHA_Action/status/204…

“China is now eating our lunch.” RFK Jr. warns the U.S. is losing its edge to China in medical research and drug development. “They got more drugs approved last year.” “They went from running 3% of clinical trials to running 30%.” “We are losing scientists, we’re losing our IPs, we’re losing the best researchers.” “We’re going to lose our biosecurity.” “We are fast-tracking approvals now in our country at record levels.”

For some reason, systematic visa denials, funding cuts, dubious prosecutions, and hostile rhetoric/racism coming from the very top (ie 'Chinese virus') don't appear to be the best ways to keep critical talent.

There are hawks who see China's leaders as a threat and want to confront them specifically. Then there are hawks who see China's very existence as a threat and would be perfectly happy to see the entire country implode and 1.4 billion people suffer. x.com/semafor/status/2043806…
