The "When I retire in 5 years" Pastor. How would you handle this?
Had a call yesterday from an Associate Pastor at a mediuim sized church in Texas. He joined this church at the age of 32 as the Associate Pastor - preaching once a month and overseeing family and kids ministry...
The associate pastor likes the church just fine and is well-liked by the congregation. The messy part is that the lead pastor founded the church in the 90s and is beloved by members of the church and community. The associate pastor feels like he wasted 2 years on empty promises
Some of his responsibilities, given that he wanted to retire in 3 years, based on their earlier conversation. The lead pastor balked and said he planned to be pastor of that church for "at least 5 more years..."
Would be his successor. He's been in this role for 2 years; his responsibilities have not changed or grown, and that "5-year plan" seems to be a moving target.
He called me because he decided enough is enough and asked his lead pastor when he would begin offboarding...
The church has an elder board, which he is not on, but he is the chair of the Deacons, managing the day-to-day operations of the church.
During the interview, the lead pastor, who was 60, told him he planned to retire in 5 years and that his vision was for the associate...
