It's the Birthday of Maurice Sendak June 10, 1928 – May 8, 2012 –– that unforgettable illustrator and author of children's books. He wanted to help children deal with scary things. He is still relevant to us today, because WE ADULTS are still dealing with scary things. Being an entrepreneur is SCARY. But––creating anything of value involves RISK. Entrepreneurs must be very, very BRAVE. Successful entrepreneurs take risks where other people do not. Maurice loved Herman Melville. Here's what Maurice said on the risk of CREATING: "Herman Melville said that artists have to take a dive & either you hit your head on a rock & you split your skull & you die. . . OR that blow to the head is so inspiring that you come back & do the best work that you ever did. But you have to take the dive, and you do not know what the results will be."

Which orange circle is larger? Seems a simple answer. Both circles are the same size. It’s an optical illusion. Good design works without saying a word. It supports your words. And it supports your business. If you need to accentuate some bit of important information on your website or brochure, you need a graphic designer to help you draw attention to the right things. Graphic Design. It’s part art. And part science.

Customer service is all you’ve got. If they can get the same bad service anywhere at a lesser cost, what’s to stop them?

How observant do you think you are? The powers of observation must be keen in an Entrepreneur. I read this description of a simple square, written by the masterful John McWade. Somehow I feel like I have never really SEEN one before.

For a long time, we measured the things the coach told us to measure, thinking he knew better than we did. Come to find out, those standard KPI's didn't matter a hoot to our business. A small business entrepreneur has way too much to do to measure things that do not matter. inc.com/diana-bocco/founders…

Achievement-based approval. Recognizing our demand for it may be the first step in escaping it. It's a very powerful drug, and many entrepreneurs start business to get it. Like all addictions, it implodes. greggvanourek.com/hidden-tra…

Maya Angelou captures the heart of marketing: "You can only become truly accomplished at something you love. Don't make money your goal. Instead, pursue the things you love doing, and then do them so well that people can't take their eyes off you."
