Yet it is not those who initiated the war, who continue to kill, promote war, and engage in mercenary activities, who are being held accountable. Instead, it is us, ordinary citizens of Russia, who raise our voices against war and for peace. We are the ones paying the price, with our freedom and, in some cases, our lives. I belong to a fading generation whose parents participated in or survived World War II with all its hardships. This now-departed generation left us a legacy: to safeguard peace as the most precious thing on Earth for all its inhabitants. But we have disregarded their legacy and devalued our memory of those people and the sacrifices of that war. My guilt lies in the fact that, as a citizen of my country, I allowed this war to happen and could not stop it. I ask that this be noted in the verdict. But I would also like my guilt and responsibility to be shared by the organizers, participants, supporters of the war, and the persecutors of those who advocate for peace. I continue to live with the hope that this will happen someday. In the meantime, I ask the people of Ukraine and my fellow citizens affected by the war to forgive me. In the case for which I was accused and tried—simply for expressing the opinion that we must seek to end this war—I have fully conveyed my stance on this vile human endeavor. I can only say that violence and aggression breed only more violence, nothing else. This is the root cause of our suffering, our senseless losses, and the destruction of civilian and industrial infrastructure, as well as our homes. Let us put an end to this bloody slaughter, which benefits no one—not us, nor the people of Ukraine.
